Solar PV is the only practical solution for mass uptake of renewable energy generation. There seems to be a preference in the media to talk about wind power over solar when it comes to feed-in tariffs – I wonder why? Perhaps it’s because wind is more emotive with its potential for visual intrusion and noise, or maybe it’s because of a misconception that ‘it can’t be sunny enough in the UK for solar’.
This article from yesterday’s Sunday Times is a case in point (see point 5, ‘Get a Windmill’).
The article is actually very helpful in terms of explaining the returns possible from Solar PV, but what it neglects to mention is that, despite the title, the option of fitting a wind turbine will only be available to a tiny minority of households in the UK. I’m no Don Quixote but whilst wind is a great way to generate electricity, the realistic option for the vast number of UK households is PV and the sooner that the message gets out clearly, the sooner we can make really make an impact.
